What is ramen

Ramen is a noodle soup, usually made with a meat-based broth, and often seasoned with soy sauce, salt and/or miso. It is usually served with vegetables (bamboo shoots and scallions are commonly added), meat (often pork) and egg. It is a national dish in Japan, and increasingly popular abroad.

There are many types of ramen, a well-known variety is shoyu ramen, which consists of a broth based on soy sauce and seaweed. This broth is usually made with chicken bones, but can also be made with pork bones. This type of ramen is usually served with an egg mollet.

Where does ramen come from?

It is a food of Chinese origin that was introduced in Yokohama, Japan in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by immigrants arriving from China. It became popular after World War II, due in part to the increased use of wheat instead of rice.

Tips for choosing your bowl

Size:

First let’s talk about the size. The most common is about 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter at the top and a height of 9 cm (3.5 inches).

This is an adequate medium size.

If you are going to serve more ramen frequently there are larger sizes, 23cm in diameter (9 inches) and 10cm high (4 inches) in these bowls fit more than a liter and a half.

In addition to the width, the height of the bowls influences the time it takes for the contents to cool.

Bowl shapes:

Ramen is served with a spoon and chopsticks.

The proper shape of your bowl will depend on the proportion of soup, noodles and other ingredients you usually serve.

A wide opening is ideal for a lot of soup.

A rounded shape, i.e. the outer part is not very straight, but more concave, is suitable for serving many ingredients.

The thickness of the upper part, the “mouth”, makes it easier for it to splinter if it suffers a blow.

The high bottom with a raised base means that we can hold a bowl with less chance of burning ourselves.

How to serve in a bowl of ramen:

Related to the size is the amount to be served. It is NOT necessary to reach the top of the bowl, that is to say to fill 4/5 parts of the bowl. Not only is it more comfortable to eat but it will be more aesthetically pleasing than an “overflowing” or half-full bowl.
